Laser Towards Milky Ways Center.

The color of the laser is precisely tuned to energize a layer of sodium atoms found in one of the upper layers of the atmosphere — one can recognize the familiar color of sodium street lamps in the color of the laser.

This layer of sodium atoms is thought to be a leftover from meteorites entering the Earth’s atmosphere. When excited by the light from the laser, the atoms start glowing, forming a small bright spot that can be used as an artificial reference star for the adaptive optics. Using this technique, astronomers can obtain sharper observations. For example, when looking towards the center of our Milky Way, researchers can better monitor the galactic core, where a central super massive black hole, surrounded by closely orbiting stars, is swallowing gas and dust.

Taken with a wide angle lens, this photo covers about 180° of the sky.

I am so happy Leon Russell was inducted into the Rock and Roll Music Hall of Fame! Seeing him on Saturday Night Live again after over 20 years! I remember the first time I saw Leon. I had a little portable black and white TV in my room and I was able to get a PBS station that aired the show Soundstage from Chicago. I saw the above vision belting out A Song For You. It was 1971. I instantly fell in love with Leon. I have seen Leon Live many times since 1971. Since today is Leon’s Birthday I want to say Happy Birthday Leon! You are the Master of Space and Time!

Lost.........and Found

Last Saturday, my hubby came home from a baseball game and was looking frantically for something. I asked him what he was looking for. He said his Koozie. He went back to his car, and everywhere he walked when he came home but could not find it. He said he thought he lost it at the baseball park. Then he asked me if I thought we should go back to the baseball park and look for it. I told him it couldn’t hurt. So we drove 15 miles to look for that Koozie. You see, it’s a special Koozie that can only be found at the most recent Less Than Jake show he went to in Houston. We drove in silence secretly praying we would find that Koozie. As we entered the drive, his eyes were scanning the parking lot where he had parked his car. As he got closer, he spotted it! Under my breath and I am sure his too, we both said “Thanks be to God” it was still there. It was lying face down in the spot where it fell out of his car. That was a big relief and the lost Koozie was found!
